Cell Technology Centre at the Institute of Cytology of the Russian Academy of Sciences is equipped with a GMP-compliant laboratory. The objectives of the laboratory are development, standardisation, production and implementation into practical medicine of innovative cell products in accordance with national and international GMP, GLP and GCP standards.

The centre will be home to the CompacT automated cell cultivation system, which will enable the creation of its own stem cell bank. The bank will enable collaboration with foreign institutes for research, such as reprogramming healthy donor mature cells into immature stem cells (iPSCs, induced pluripotent cells) for their further transformation into any specialised cells and tissues for transplantation into patients.

The main limitation of the site is the area. The centre occupies just 100 square metres. But the key problem of the centre before the thorough overhaul was the illogical layout of the rooms, which made it very difficult for the researchers to work.

We created a convenient interconnection between the production premises. We provided the optimum number of airlocks – 3 airlocks to enter the cleanliness class A area, through 2 class B areas. And we created an additional sampling area for drug testing.

Selection of the equipment was carried out in close tandem with the head production laboratory technician. Some of the equipment was already in place, and the additional equipment was selected so that everything fit perfectly with the old one. This approach is important to create a unified system and a smooth workflow.

We have taken down all the notes, received a positive opinion from State Institute of Drugs and Good Practices, and the laboratory is now up and running. We hope that we have contributed to a future scientific breakthrough in cell technology research.
